Question

Do you let your kids swear?

I'm curious about where people draw the line. I know some people who don't even allow "damn it," while others overlook the 'S' word... obviously please don't break our community guidelines, but do you let your kids swear and how do you manoeuvre them from the really 'bad' words (if, indeed, you do)?

Question

How can we teach kids not to drop litter?

I'm quite surprised to be writing this, because it seems like a no-brainer. Of course we all teach our kids not to drop rubbish, don't we?! And then I got a group email from my boys' school today saying that children had been seen dropping sweet wrappers in the school playground at home time, and could we all remind our children to use the bins... Am I alone in being shocked and how can we make sure kids think to put rubbish in the bin?

Question

Can a game improve mental performance?

Many sources on internet reveal that kids who play online brain games daily for at least 10 minutes can improve their mental health three times as compared to those who don't play games at all. The games are designed by neuroscientists and help enhance the problem solving efficiency and decision making power. What are your views? Did you ever allow your child to play online brain games?

Question

Is television as bad as everyone says?

We hear so many negative comments about the impact of television on children, however I am seeing that my daughter is picking up a lot of vocabulary and imaginative play through the programmes that she watches. She doesn't watch it all the time, but she is clearly picking up a variety of skills that I see as positive. Am i being too simplistic? I only ask as I feel that i am missing something.

How can teenagers eating frequently with parents reduce truancy?

A recent study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has indicated a correlation between eating meals with parents and higher school attendance. What are the possible reasons for this? Is it simply a reflection of strong family values having a positive influence on young peoples education or are the reasons more varied and complex?

Question

Should I follow my teen on Tumblr?

I vaguely knew that my teen was getting into Tumblr, but I didn't know she had a site of her own, with hundreds of posts dating back months. So now I've found it, do I read it, or steer well clear? Is this the modern day equivalent of the teenage diary, or is it OK to read since it's published in a public format? I just had a quick glance and she's posting on there now when she's supposed to be doing homework.

Question

Does your child use Instant Messaging?

I'm writing an article about IM and was just interested in other parents' experiences. It seems futile to try and stop your child using BBM, WhatsApp, Snapchat or whatever is their instant message app of choice, so how can we help them to manage it? What advice should we give? (assuming they'll listen) Do you monitor your child's messages or trust them to get on with it?

Question

The new Gen of consumers are growing up immersed in a digital world, will this need to be replicated in their real worlds in order to engage?

As Generation Z and now even Generation Alpha, are growing up in an age where wireless high speed internet is just like air to them and 17% of under 3s now own their own laptop or tablet, it is clear to see that they are a generation of digital natives, like no generation we have ever experienced before. We have already seen stores replicating this digital world in-store for children, such as Harrods Toy Kingdom and The Nature Trial Installation at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London but what about when these children come of age and become the main consumer cohort? Will brands need to change the way they create in-store experiences for these consumers to continue to engage digitally with them?

Question

How to stop my teenager's texting addiction?

My 13 year old daughter texts during meals, while she is brushing her teeth, while she is going to school, in the cafeteria, while doing homework, and even before going to bed. She is a texting addict! I hate that she does it when all our family is at a restaurant. If I tell her to stop, she just does it under the table. The thing that really annoys me is that she doesn’t take part in family activities any more, what should I do?
