Should I let my 11-year-old ride the bus alone?

In order to go to a sleepover on Friday night (tonight!) and bowling with her friends tomorrow, my daughter (11) would need to get a bus back home from the nearest town. It's a 10 mile journey, the same one she does every day with her school friends. But this time it's on a Saturday and she'd be on her own... I don't want to smother her, she will have her phone with her, we've talked through the usual safety stuff but I'm still very nervous. Any opinions?!

Its right to be nervous, and completely normal. Remember that most people are good (in fact more than 99.96% of the UK population) and will help your child if in difficulties. She has a mobile phone, and if she makes the journey every day anyway then she will be fine!

When I was 11 years old (which was quite a few years ago) I travelled all the way from Coleraine in Northern Ireland to London via public transport by myself - including busses, trains and a ferry - and this was before the days of mobile phones! Its a fantastic life-learning experience, and is really important.
