Great stories with strong female characters?

My niece, 5, has started reading and I want to give her some great story books to start with. I am not too keen on princesses, or fairy tale protagonists whose main aim in life is to marry the rich prince. Please suggest any stories/books with tough female characters.

Babette Cole has a series of books that play with the traditional prince and princess gender types, so Prince Cinders and Princess Smartypants are good fun reads.

It's bugging me that I can't think of more at the moment, but I will come back.

In the meantime, have a look at the Studio Ghibli films which almost always feature a female hero. Me and my girls adore them and watch them again and again. My Neighbour Totoro and Ponyo are a good starting point, and if she is good with language then Arietty which is based on The Borrowers.
