Do harrowing online and TV charity adverts harm children, or encourage a social conscience?

A bit of both. On the one hand they are good because it prompts my step son to ask me questions such as 'why is that child crying?' This then leads to a discussion around how lucky he is and how unfortunate some others are. On the other hand, these adverts have given him nightmares and made him afraid of things he wouldn't usually encounter.

I think that is too generic a question. It all comes down to age and circumstances. Can they handle the message, is it relevant to them, will it help them in some way?
