There are so many apps around to help children learn to write, and one of the best sites reviewing these can be found at http://bestappsforkids.com/ They look at the range of apps to help kids write and review them covering criteria such as Quality, Education, Entertainment, Value, and Child Friendliness.

Personally though I have to say you can't be good old fashioned paper and a mixed bunch of crayons, pens, and pencils and let them get creative with a blank piece of paper - developing their fine motor skills is really important and there are lots of fun ways to do this without needing to 'tap' and 'swipe'.
