Can Instagram show the happiest cities?

How happy is your city? The new city guide app called Jetpac has invented some big data technology to garner all sorts of information about a place by analyzing millions of photos posted on Instagram. It looked at pictures of people smiling and laughing to come up with the list of the 20 happiest cities in UK. But does Instagram show what the people are actually doing and how happy they seem to be?

As you say, they seem to be. It isn't quite real. Everyone's life looks better on social media because people usually put all the positive things about their life on sites like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. They want everyone to think they have perfect lives, or they don't want to seem like the whiny negative type.

If you spend most of the day being sad and have a really miserable day, you won't take a picture of that or put it on Facebook. Instead you will post about how great your new fitness wristband is and how happy you're that you remember it. It's true, but if you assumed your entire life was like that one moment you'd get a different picture of it than would be accurate.
