At what age is it appropriate to leave kids at home while you work in the holidays?

Next week is half-term in most of the UK and I'm interested in what ages people feel comfortable leaving the kids/teens at home while they go to work outside of the home. I will add my own answer, but would like to see others' first!

It depends on where one lives and whether there is a law in place regarding leaving children home alone. Some states in the US specify the legal minimum age as 12 and another state at 14 whilst the majority don't specify ages at all. In the UK the law does not set a minimum age either. This is a good guideline as published in the US https://www.childwelfare.gov/pubs/factsheets/homealone.pdf#page=1&view=Introduction
