Are typing skills more important than handwriting?

It's not essential anymore, I'll say that. In the same way that you can run and own a business and be poor at accountancy, you can be a writer and have awful handwriting. Typing skills are fine, but hand-eye coordination is becoming more important in the tactile computing world. Gesture control and design are relevent with touchscreen and other intuitive devices. If you're not good with a pen or a touchpad or a mouse, then a 110 WPM typing speed might not be the most useful skill to have.

Both are important. Learning how to hold and manipulate a pencil develops hand/eye coordination and manual skill. I can't tell you how many high-schoolers I've taught who don't have the first idea how to properly hold a pencil. Their writing suffers for it: they write more slowly and less legibly. Our electronic devices may fail, batteries run down, power go out, but we will always have two hands at the ends of our arms and we need to train children to use them properly.

When you look at the amount of tweets, emails and texts you type a day, it may look like handwriting’s gone the way of the Sinclair C5. But handwriting still has an important place in your child’s education.

When was the last time you wrote a letter? A proper letter I mean, with lovely joined up letters and more than a page of words? I don’t think I’ve written one this year, though I’ve sent countless emails in that time.

Whilst it seems autocorrect and keyboards are destined to make spelling and handwriting classes redundant – and many children learn words a lot easier by typing than with a pen and paper – blogger and primary school teacher Susanne Remic thinks typing skills can be a help rather than an alternative.

‘Scribing shapes, letters and words is an art and a necessary skill for children to learn. The act of writing is used so frequently in adult life with shopping lists, signatures, medical consent forms etc. Learning handwriting is therefore essential for children. There is always a need to write, but not always a need to type.’

Still, that’s overlooking the note taking abilities of smart phones and writeable touch screens. Remic may not think keyboard skills are as essential as handwriting, but the person who can’t confidently and quickly type out an email will be at a disadvantage in the workplace.

In future the person who knows their way round a QWERTY keyboard will be better equipped for the modern world than the person with lovely handwriting.

Both are important. Typing lessons should be taught as a mandatory skill as driving or swimming lessons in school. But even if computers will dot their I’s and cross their T’s for much of their life, handwriting is still very important, especially now because it's a skill that is being used less.

As old school as I may sound, but I still keep a small diary with me in my bag all the times to quickly capture a thought. Funny enough, I have also downloaded few apps to do the same in my phone and I have used them sometimes. I would want my kids to have the same flexibility. They write or type - but they should be able to do both.

Moreover, it would be nice to see them writing their Save the date cards, season's greetings, quick post-its, messages on gift tags in clear, beautiful handwriting.
